What are the sequelae of greater omentum removal

Most patients have no specific clinical manifestations after omentotomy, but a small number of patients may develop some sequelae, such as intestinal adhesions. The greater omentum can prevent intestinal adhesions to the peritoneum after surgery, but after removal of the greater omentum there is no umbrella, and some intestinal adhesions are more severe and can form a certain angle, which may lead to adhesive intestinal obstruction. If the intestinal adhesions are severe, a second surgery may be required to separate the adherent tissues and, if necessary, to remove the adherent intestine and redo the anastomosis. If infection develops in the abdominal cavity after omentectomy, it may also cause diffuse peritonitis, which can lead to shock in severe cases.
