Hawthorn is the dried mature fruit of Shanlihong or Hawthorn, family Rosaceae. It is sour and sweet in taste and slightly warm in nature. Attributes to spleen, stomach and liver meridians. It can eliminate food and strengthen the stomach, move qi and dissipate blood stasis, dissolve turbidity and reduce fat (cleanse the body of foul substances and reduce excess body fat). It is used for meat and food stagnation, stomach and epigastric distension, diarrhea and abdominal pain, blood stasis and menstrual closure, postpartum stagnation, stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, chest paralysis (chest tightness and pain), heart pain, hernia pain and hyperlipidemia.
