What to do if your ear hurts when you have facial paralysis

The presence of ear pain in facial paralysis indicates that the patient’s facial paralysis may be triggered by a viral infection. This pain is sometimes not limited to the ear but also involves the jaw. It is important to observe the patient’s external ear canal for herpes, as the viruses that cause facial paralysis are most commonly herpes simplex or herpes zoster viruses. Whether herpes is observed or not, antiviral therapy should be given along with early hormonal use. Commonly used hormonal medications are dexamethasone, prednisone, or methylprednisolone, and antiviral medications are often ganciclovir, acyclovir, or ribavirin, both of which are given for a course of about 10 days. Vitamin B1, methylcobalamin, cytarabine capsules and other nutritive neurological treatments should also be given, and the patient’s ear pain can be relieved in about 10 days of antiviral treatment.
