How long does internal fixation last after atlantoaxial fracture surgery?

Removal of internal fixation in patients with atlantoaxial fractures takes at least one year. Imaging studies, such as CT or MRI, are usually performed to determine how well the fracture is healing before the internal fixation is removed. If the atlantoaxial fracture is healing well and symptoms have largely disappeared, surgery to remove the internal fixation may be considered. However, if the patient’s recovery is relatively poor, the second removal of the internal fixation is often delayed. After the internal fixation is removed, patients should also strengthen the protection of the neck, reduce the low head strain, strenuous exercise and other unfavorable factors, and avoid trauma, so as not to cause recurrence of the disease. In addition, patients can carry out postoperative rehabilitation to promote the healing of the fracture and the recovery of neck stability.
