MRI uses the nucleus of the hydrogen atom in the body, which is imaged by the movement of an applied magnetic field, so there is no radiation to the body. In some special cases, babies and pregnant women can also undergo this test. There is no overall effect on the child, but because the baby may not cooperate with the test due to crying, the baby should be sedated before the MRI by enema or other means. A very small number of babies may have an allergic reaction to these medications, but the chances of this happening are very low. MRI for babies is necessary for specific diseases and cannot be replaced by other imaging methods, so parents should not worry too much and just follow the doctor’s instructions.
