Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is an infectious disease caused by an acute enterovirus that affects mainly children under five years of age. Children with HFMD present with fever and rash. The rash is characteristic and is mainly located in the mouth, palms, soles, buttocks, perianal area, and inner thigh skin, and appears as a milia-like or mung-bean-like herpes surrounded by erythema, which subsides in about 2-4 days and does not leave any hyperpigmentation. HFMD is usually mild, and only 2% of children develop severe disease with encephalitis, meningitis, cerebrospinal meningitis, and pulmonary edema.
