Patients with HIV who do not take medication at all will go through the incubation period of AIDS before entering the AIDS phase which eventually causes death. The average incubation period of AIDS is about 9 years, with short periods of a few months and long periods of more than 10 years. After the AIDS stage, death can occur very quickly, with the average survival period for patients in the AIDS stage being only 1-1.5 years. In combination with Kaposi’s sarcoma and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, the patient may die within a few months, and the death rate can be as high as 50% at 1 year, 80% at 3 years, and almost all at 5 years. Therefore, after HIV infection is diagnosed, treatment with antiviral drugs should be administered as soon as possible to prevent the patient from progressing to the AIDS stage and thus causing death.
