What to do if you can’t sleep after dialysis

Sleeplessness after dialysis can be treated by adjusting dialysis patterns and medications depending on the etiology. The causes may be related to dialysis imbalance, sleep disorder, and restless legs syndrome.
1. Dialysis imbalance, caused by rapid decrease of plasma osmolality due to rapid removal of uremic toxins, manifested by irritability, headache, nausea, vomiting, etc. The above symptoms may lead to difficulty in sleeping or inability to sleep, which can be treated by increasing the frequency of dialysis and shortening the time of the first time dialyzers relatively.
2. Sleep disorder is a common neurological complication in patients on maintenance hemodialysis. Coffee and alcohol should be avoided, and benzodiazepines such as clonazepam can be taken orally in severe cases.
3. Restless legs syndrome, manifested as abnormal sensation deep in the muscles, may have burning sensation, severe pain, the lower limbs obviously, can only be relieved by moving the feet, so it affects sleep. Dopamine agonists such as pramipexole can be taken to improve the symptoms.
People who can not sleep after dialysis may also have other reasons, it is recommended to communicate with the doctor in the dialysis center, under the guidance of the doctor’s treatment, do not self-medication.
