You generally can’t get rabies from accidentally eating dog saliva. Rabies is a highly fatal disease that affects both humans and animals. In humans, rabies is caused when the rabies virus that causes rabies enters the bloodstream. Rabies cannot be transmitted through the digestive tract, so individuals who accidentally eat dog saliva generally do not get rabies, and the dogs they come into contact with do not necessarily carry the rabies virus. Individuals do not need to worry too much. Although the danger of rabies is extremely serious, it is important for individuals to recognize the disease correctly. Individuals are generally at risk for rabies only if they are bitten, scratched, or licked on broken skin or mucous membranes by an animal that has rabies or carries the rabies virus. Individuals who have been injured by an animal suspected of having the disease are advised to receive rabies vaccination.
