Pain on pressure below the bone in the middle of the chest needs to be ruled out for costochondritis and costal neuritis. The sternum and ribs form the sternocostal joint, and in patients with costochondritis and costal neuritis, pain can be induced when pressing on the sternum. In the case of pain in the soft tissue below the sternum, i.e., the glabellar process, the possibility of gastrointestinal disorders needs to be considered. In addition, in rare cases, it is necessary to exclude the presence of aortic coarctation, pulmonary tamponade, heart attack, and other more serious causes. In addition, chronic pleurisy and respiratory tract infections may also cause pain on pressure at the sternum. In any case, the patient may try oral anti-inflammatory treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for pain relief. In patients with costochondritis or costal neuritis, most of the symptoms are relieved significantly after 1-2 weeks, but in case of other disorders, there may be no significant effect and further examination is needed.
