Generally, Zopiclone should not be taken for a long period of time. Zopiclone is a sedative-hypnotic drug, this drug prolongs sleep, improves sleep quality, reduces early awakenings and nighttime awakenings. This medication is indicated for transient insomnia and short-term insomnia in adults. As with other hypnotic medications, zopiclone is not recommended for long-term use due to the potential for elevated risk of drug dependence with prolonged use of this medication. Zopiclone may trigger side effects such as taste disorders (bitter taste), drowsiness, headache and dizziness, agitated nightmares, dry mouth, nausea, and fatigue. It is contraindicated in patients suffering from myasthenia gravis, severe sleep apnea syndrome, severe respiratory insufficiency, severe acute or chronic hepatic insufficiency, allergy after intolerance to gluten, and hypersensitivity to zopiclone.
