Augustus is effective in dispersing the liver and harmonizing the stomach, activating blood circulation to relieve pain (relieving pain by removing blood stasis), softening and dispersing knots (softening and dispersing hard lumps), and inducing urination. It is used for treating stagnation of qi in the liver and stomach, distension and pain in the epigastrium (abdomen) and coats of arms, failure to eat or drink, dysentery, hernia pain, lumbago, menstrual dysmenorrhea, gall tumors (equivalent to thyroid tumors), scrofula (mainly refers to tuberculosis of cervical lymph nodes), and so on. Augustia belongs to the class of liver-sparing and depression-relieving (treating depression by unblocking the liver’s qi) medicines, and is the fruit of the white and three-leafed Mucuna pruriens, Mucuna pruriens, of the Mucuna pruriens family. It is also known as prehensile, enters the liver meridian and kidney meridian, sweet in flavor and warm in nature. Adverse effects of Augustus is not clear. It is contraindicated for those with a history of allergy and should be taken with caution by pregnant women.
