There are a lot of people who may feel unfamiliar with intussusception. Today, let’s learn more about what is intussusception? Intussusception is a condition in which a section of the intestinal tube is trapped in the lumen of the intestine to which it is attached, causing obstruction to the passage of intestinal contents. Intussusception is an emergency in pediatrics, mostly caused by the disturbance of the normal rhythm of intestinal peristalsis. It is more likely to occur in infants and young children, especially those under 2 years old, and decreases year by year with the increase of age after 2 years old. Intussusception is an acute disease, and once it occurs, there will be more obvious symptoms. These symptoms include: i. abdominal pain, children with intussusception will have paroxysmal crying, screaming, and pallor; ii. blood in the stool, dark red, jam-like stools; iii. abdominal mass, a weenie-like mass may be palpable in the abdomen; iv. vomiting, refusal of breastfeeding or eating; v. systemic conditions, high fever, severe dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance causing toxicity or shock. These are common symptoms of intussusception, once the child appears similar symptoms, is the need to pay attention to, may be related to intussusception. There are two types of non-surgical and surgical treatments for pediatric acute intussusception. Among the non-surgical therapies, there are air enema, barium enema and ultrasound water pressure enema reset therapy, of which air enema reset has been widely used for a long time. Whether it is air enema reset or surgical reset, there is a possibility of recurrence of intussusception in the near future. Therefore, if parents find that their children have paroxysmal crying, vomiting and irritability again, they should bring their children to the hospital in time. For the understanding of intussusception, it should be further known that there are two types of intussusception: primary and secondary. Primary intussusception occurs mostly in infants and young children, while secondary intussusception is more common in adults. That is to say, adults may also have intussusception, but the chances are less, and the symptoms are not much different from those of children, so it is not difficult to distinguish between them by paying attention.
