Emphysema belongs to the category of lung distension in Chinese medicine, and Gui Zhi Fu Ling Water contains only two herbs, which cannot have a good curative effect on lung distension. Lung emphysema, or lung distension in Chinese medicine, is a disease caused by the recurrence of various lung diseases that do not heal, and the deficiency of the lungs, spleen and kidneys, resulting in the distension of lung qi and the inability to astringent and subdued lung qi. The treatment of lung distention needs to be based on the four diagnostic data to identify the symptoms and medication. Chinese medicine practitioners usually categorize lung distension into phlegm and turbidity congestion of the lungs, phlegm-heat stagnation of the lungs, and yang-deficiency and water-flooding (a deficiency of yang qi that causes obstruction to the flow of water and liquids in the body). Phlegm-heat congestion of the lungs is usually treated with Su Zi Descending Qi Tang combined with San Zi Nourishing Relatives Tang, which contains Chinese herbs such as Perilla frutescens, Semen Haematoxylinis, Hau Pu, Qian Hu, Lycopersicon, and Bai Zhi Zi. It is mainly treated by resolving phlegm and lowering lung qi, strengthening the spleen and benefiting the lungs (strengthening the functions of the spleen and lungs). Phlegm-heat and lung congestion is often treated with Yue Maidu Plus Half-summer Tang, which mainly contains ephedra, gypsum, and half-summer, etc. It can clear the lungs and resolve phlegm (clearing lung-heat and dissolving phlegm-evil), lowering the rebelliousness and calming the wheezing. Yang deficiency with water flooding is often treated with Zhen Wu Tang combined with Wu Ling San, which mainly includes Poria, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Radix Polygoni Multiflori, Radix Paeoniae Alba, and Radix et Rhizoma Zingiberis, which can warm the kidneys and strengthen the spleen (warming the kidneys and strengthening the spleen), and dissolve the drinks and relieve water. For patients with lung distension who need to receive Chinese medicine as an adjunctive treatment, it is recommended that they go to a regular medical institution and follow the doctor’s instructions for standardized treatment, and do not use medication on their own.
