Acne is also known as “pimples” and “face sores” in Chinese medicine, and can be categorized as wind-heat in the lungs, damp-heat in the stomach and intestines, and phlegm-dampness and stagnation, with clearing heat and dispelling dampness as the basic treatment principle, and can be treated with Pei Pa Koa Clearing Lung Drink, Artemisia Incarnatum Soup, Er Chen Tang, and Peach Red Four Substances Soup, etc. Chinese herbal prescriptions can be used for treatment. 1. Wind-heat syndrome of the lung meridian: the symptoms include papules with red color, itching and pain, or pustules; accompanied by thirst and desire to drink, constipation, short and red urine (small amount of urine, dark yellow color); red tongue, thin and yellow moss, and slippery pulse. The treatment is to clear the wind and the lung. Add and subtract Pei Pa Koa Lung Cleansing Drink for treatment. 2. Damp-heat syndrome of the stomach and intestines: greasy skin on the face, chest and back, red, swollen and painful rashes, or pustules; accompanied by bad breath, constipation, and yellow ulcer; red tongue, yellowish moss, and slippery pulse. The treatment is to clear away heat, remove dampness and detoxify the toxin. It can be treated with the addition and subtraction of Artemisia capillaris soup. 3. Phlegm-dampness stagnation syndrome: the rash is dark red in color, with nodules, abscesses, cysts, scars, or sinus tracts, which is difficult to be cured after a long time; accompanied by dullness (no appetite, less food) and abdominal distension; the tongue is dark red, the moss is yellow and greasy, and the pulse is stringy and slippery. The treatment should remove dampness and resolve phlegm, activate blood circulation and dissipate knots. It can be treated by combining Er Chen Tang with Tao Hong Si Wu Tang with additions and subtractions.
