Fresh or dried fava beans are better for Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s patients can eat fava beans in moderation, fresh and dried fava beans are available, there is no significant difference. The loss or degeneration of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons in Parkinson’s patients leads to a significant decrease in the concentration of dopamine transmitters, causing patients to experience symptoms such as muscle tonus, decreased movement, and tremor, etc. Commonly used medications for treating Parkinson’s include levodopa, bromocriptine, and pramipexole, etc. Some studies have reported that fava beans contain natural levodopa, which is a natural dopamine. Some studies have reported that fava beans contain natural levodopa, and theoretically, eating fava beans can replenish levodopa levels in patients. However, the dose of the active ingredient in food is very small, and it is difficult to reach the therapeutic dose, so food cannot play a therapeutic role and cannot relieve patients’ symptoms. Therefore, as long as Parkinson’s patients are not allergic to fava beans and do not suffer from diseases that are not suitable for eating fava beans, such as glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, it is possible to eat fava beans in moderation, but it cannot play a therapeutic role. Patients with Parkinson’s disease need to actively manage their condition through conventional treatment programs, such as medication, surgery, and rehabilitation. Medications need to be used under medical supervision.
