What to do if you get small pieces of iron in your eye

Small fragments of iron in the patient’s eye can form an ocular foreign body injury, and the patient can have the foreign body removed, including by surgery. When iron fragments are hidden on the surface of the conjunctiva or in the superficial layer of the cornea, surface anesthetics such as lidocaine drops can be used, and then the conjunctival sac can be flushed to remove the foreign body. After removal of the foreign body, patients can use antibiotics such as tobramycin eye drops as prescribed to prevent infection. For foreign bodies deeper in the cornea, a sterile hypodermic needle can be used to remove them and scrape them as clean as possible, and multiple foreign bodies can be removed in stages. If the foreign body is large or even penetrates the cornea into the anterior chamber, the foreign body can be removed by microsurgery. It is recommended that patients with iron fragments in their eyes seek medical attention to assess their condition and follow medical advice.
