Does TMJ cause ringing in the ears?

TMJ may cause tinnitus. In the anatomy of the human body, the temporomandibular joint is very close to the external ear canal, separated only by a very thin layer of cartilage of the external ear canal. Sometimes problems with the temporomandibular joint, such as trauma, joint disorders, or other diseases of the joint, can easily affect the ear, meaning that the external auditory canal can be irritated. If it is more severe, it may affect the inner ear and cause tinnitus symptoms. If tinnitus occurs, there are generally two possibilities. The first one is that the tinnitus is found to be accompanied by temporomandibular joint disorder or temporomandibular joint disease through examination, so the temporomandibular joint disease can be treated first. The second type is the ear itself, i.e. primary tinnitus, and patients are advised to visit the ENT department for further examination and treatment.
