What to do if you have a sore throat and a hoarse cough

Causes of sore throat, hoarse voice and cough are acute laryngitis, laryngeal tuberculosis or laryngeal cancer, etc. Treatments include nebulized inhalation, medication, surgery and anti-tuberculosis treatment.
1. Acute laryngitis: it is a common cause of the above symptoms. It is recommended to drink more warm water, control the use of voice to let the vocal cords rest, and inhale glucocorticosteroids to reduce swelling and anti-inflammation, such as budesonide suspension; if there is viral infection, use anti-viral drugs, such as ribavirin; if there is bacterial infection, use antibiotics, such as penicillin; and if there is a serious cough, use cough suppressant drugs, such as dextromethorphan.
2. Laryngeal tuberculosis: Laryngeal tuberculosis, which is often secondary to tuberculosis, may present with symptoms such as cough, fever, sore throat and hoarse voice. Anti-tuberculosis treatment such as isoniazid, rifampicin, streptomycin, pyrazinamide, etc. should be recommended. Supportive therapy and vocal rest should be paid attention to, and tracheotomy should be performed as early as possible when severe respiratory difficulty occurs.
3. Laryngeal cancer: mostly related to long-term smoking and drinking, hoarseness is a typical symptom of laryngeal cancer, especially vocal cord cancer, cough, pain, throat discomfort, foreign body sensation, bloody sputum or hemoptysis are non-specific symptoms of laryngeal cancer. The treatments for laryngeal cancer include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and biotherapy, etc. At present, surgery is mostly used as the main treatment method, assisted by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
When there are symptoms of sore throat, hoarse voice and cough, it is recommended to go to the hospital in time and take treatment under doctor’s guidance.
