Is diabetes hereditary?

Diabetes itself is not inherited; what is inherited is the susceptibility to diabetes. Studies have shown that type 1 diabetes has multiple DNA loci involved in its onset and is prone to develop in childhood and adolescence; type 2 diabetes is associated with multiple genetic mutations, has better heritability, and often shows family aggregation. The prevalence of diabetes is significantly higher in people with a positive family history of diabetes than in those with a negative family history. In contrast, children of parents who both have diabetes have a significantly higher chance of developing diabetes than the general population.
