There are many acupoints that can help to detoxify the liver (treating depression by unblocking the liver’s qi), including the Phase Gate, Liver Yu, and Taichong. The Xiemen point is an acupoint above the foot syncopal liver meridian and is located in the chest, directly below the nipple, at the 6th intercostal space, 4 inches away from the anterior midline. The Xiemen point can treat conditions such as distension and pain in the coarseness and ribs caused by liver qi, eructation (hiccups), abdominal distension, belching (hiccups), and so on. The Liver Yu point is located on the Foot Solar Bladder Meridian, on the back, 1.5 inches below the spinous process of the 9th thoracic vertebra. The Liver Yu point can dredge the liver and regulate qi (regulate stagnation of qi in the liver), treating conditions such as coercive and rib distention and pain and menstrual irregularities caused by liver qi stagnation (poor qi and blood transportation in the liver and depression of emotions and moods). Taichong point is the original point on the foot syncopal liver meridian. The point is located on the back of the foot, in the depression in front of the union of the 1st and 2nd metatarsal bones. Taichong acupoint can relieve liver qi, treating moodiness, dystocia (pain in the area of the coats of arms and ribs), eructation, and abdominal distension caused by liver qi stagnation. Patients with liver depression can use the above acupoints to relieve liver qi and depression under the supervision of a doctor, but they must be operated by a professional acupuncturist and must not be used on their own to avoid adverse consequences.
