Ergotamine efficacy and effects

Ergotamine is mainly used for the treatment of migraine attacks. It has no preventive effect on migraine, but is only used temporarily during headache attacks and has a definite effect on the treatment of migraine. The occurrence of migraine is mostly related to the dilation of extracranial arteries, and the mechanism of action of ergotamine is mainly on the direct contraction of vascular smooth muscle, which causes the dilated extracranial arteries to contract, so that the overdilation and pulsation of cerebral arterial blood vessels return to normal, resulting in the reduction of headache. The absorption and utilization of ergotamine is low when it is taken orally alone. If combined with caffeine, the absorption of ergotamine can be improved and its efficacy can be well exerted, and the compound preparation of ergotamine and caffeine is commonly used in the market. Due to the constricting effect of ergotamine on arterial blood vessels, it can easily lead to an increase in blood pressure, increase the burden on the heart, liver and kidney dysfunction, and other side effects, so it is rarely used clinically, especially in elderly patients to avoid using it.
