What’s wrong with the swollen lower eyelid in the morning?

Unilateral eyelid edema can be caused by insect bites, allergies, inflammation, and ocular pathology, and requires symptomatic treatment. Bilateral eyelid edema may be due to allergies to medications or cosmetics, in addition to eye pathology. Excluding local lesions, ocular edema may be caused by systemic diseases, most commonly kidney disease, heart disease, rheumatologic diseases, and certain dermatologic diseases. In addition to eyelid edema, renal disease is often associated with bilateral ankle edema, along with increased foam in the urine that does not disappear within a short period of time. After kidney disease is excluded, heart disease may be considered with symptoms of arrhythmia and heart failure, such as inability to lie down at night and palpitations after activity. Other systemic pathologies, such as rheumatic system and common dermatologic diseases causing bilateral eyelid edema also have characteristics specific to their own disease.
