Normal 2-hour postprandial blood glucose for diabetes mellitus

In general, a normal 2-hour postprandial blood glucose level of less than 10.0 mmol/L is appropriate for patients with diabetes. Normal values for glycemic control should be individualized to determine the 2-hour postprandial glucose level based on the patient’s age, duration of disease, life expectancy, severity of complications, and risk of hypoglycemia. The guidelines recommend controlling 2-hour postprandial blood glucose no greater than 10.0 mmol/L to control the occurrence of diabetic complications. This criterion applies to patients who are newly diagnosed, have a short course of disease, are at low risk, and are capable of self-care. For elderly people who have developed diabetic complication disease, are at risk of hypoglycemia, and have poor self-management ability, the criteria may be appropriately relaxed. If the examination reveals abnormal blood glucose levels, prompt hospitalization is recommended.
