The need for contrast for cranial MRA examinations is determined by the vessels to be examined by cranial MRA. If an intracranial vascular examination is performed, such as middle cerebral artery, anterior cerebral artery, posterior cerebral artery, intracranial segment of vertebral artery, basilar artery, or siphon segment of internal carotid artery, contrast is usually not required for the above mentioned areas. In the case of extracranial vascular examinations, such as the subclavian artery, the beginning of the vertebral artery, the common carotid artery, the beginning of the internal carotid artery, or the beginning of the external carotid artery, a contrast agent is required. Therefore, the need for contrast in cranial MRA examinations is determined by the specific vessel to be examined.
