The main causes of pain behind the ear include postauricular subperiosteal abscess, mastoiditis and external auditory canal tumor.
1. Subperiosteal abscess behind the ear: If chronic suppurative mastoiditis of the middle ear is not controlled in time, the pus gathered in the mastoid cavity flows into the periosteum behind the ear, which may cause subperiosteal abscess behind the ear, resulting in local redness, swelling, heat, pain and bulging behind the ear. As a result, the symptom of a burst of pain behind the ear may appear.
2. Mastoiditis: the physical location of the mastoid is behind the ear, which is part of the temporal bone, when the mastoid produces acute suppurative inflammation, it will lead to a burst of pain behind the ear.
There may be other causes of pain behind the ear, such as lymphadenitis behind the ear. Therefore, it is recommended to go to the hospital for a complete examination when the above symptoms occur, and then follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment or therapy after the cause is clarified.
