What does critical high risk mean?

Critical high risk is a result of midterm Down’s syndrome screening. Screening results can be categorized as high risk, low risk, and critical risk. High risk means that the child has a higher risk of having Down syndrome, low risk means that the child has a lower risk of having Down syndrome, and critical high risk means that the risk of Down syndrome is between high and low risk, with some risk but very low risk. Both high risk and critical high risk are only screening results and do not accurately reflect the likelihood of your baby having Down syndrome. When screening results are high risk or critical high risk, amniocentesis or non-invasive DNA testing is required to ensure that the baby is born healthy and to further clarify the diagnosis.
