What causes low total protein

Low total serum protein may be present in the form of liver cell damage, malnutrition, excessive protein loss, increased consumption, and increased serum water. Total protein, known as total serum protein, is one of the important components of serum and refers to the sum of albumin and globulin in serum. 1. Hepatocellular damage: common in liver failure, chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and so on. The above mentioned diseases can lead to a decrease in the synthesizing ability of the liver, and low total protein will occur. 2. Malnutrition: If there are people with long-term partiality, picky eating or unhealthy diet, it may lead to insufficient intake of protein in food. 3. Excessive protein loss: such as nephrotic syndrome, protein-losing enteropathy, severe burns, acute hemorrhage, etc., excessive loss of protein stored in the body can also lead to low total protein. 4. Increased consumption: mostly seen in chronic wasting disease, such as severe tuberculosis, hyperthyroidism, malignant tumors, etc., such diseases will consume protein in the body for a long time, which will also lead to low total protein. 5. Increased serum water: such as water and sodium retention, or intravenous supplementation of excessive crystalloid solution, etc., will also appear in the case of low total protein. If it is caused by malnutrition, the patient needs to adjust the dietary structure and consume more food rich in high protein, high fiber and high vitamin, such as meat, eggs, milk, animal liver and seafood.
