Can insomnia induce obesity?

Scientists recently discovered to their surprise that the length of a person’s sleep has a very obvious relationship with their fat and thin, which gives people who do not want to fall into the dilemma of obesity a new over-the-counter drug: sleep enough to sleep. It is generally believed that too long sleep can cause the entire nerve center to be in a state of prolonged inhibition, and lead to the reduction of organ function, so that weight gain. But many people do not know, insomnia or lack of sleep can also induce obesity. According to foreign media reports, British scientists have claimed that the reduction of sleep time is one of the reasons for the growing expansion of obese people in developed countries. Researchers through the analysis of 18,000 in the 1980s to participate in the United States health and nutrition survey data provided by the volunteers found that, compared with those who can maintain a sleep time of 7 to 9 hours per night, less than 4 hours of sleep per night people with the risk of obesity, 73% higher than the former, and those who sleep an average of only 5 hours per day, the risk of obesity is higher 50%, and those who sleep 6 hours a night, the same risk is 23% higher. According to the Chilean newspaper “Courier” reported on the 25th, the study found that people who sleep less than 7 hours a day are prone to gain weight, the reason may be that lack of sleep affects the metabolism, so that the hormone that stimulates appetite increases, while the hormone that produces a feeling of fullness decreases. A comparative observation in the United States found that: a group of people sleep an average of only 5 hours a day, while the other group is 8 hours, the results of the two groups of glucose tolerance test no difference, but the group of short sleep not only insulin secretion than the latter increased by 50%, and sensitivity is greatly reduced. Abnormal insulin function in the presence of normal glucose tolerance is a direct cause of increased obesity. The researchers explained that the results of the comparative study were somewhat “surprising”. Because people have long believed that the body consumes little energy when sleeping, so sleep for a long time easy to become fat. I do not know when people are awake, there will be the desire to eat. In addition, long-term sleep deprivation will disrupt the normal eating time setting in the human body and make the nervous system that regulates the whole eating process disrupted. In explaining the relationship between the length of sleep and obesity, the researchers said that sleep deprivation can lead to a decrease in the concentration of the body’s elimination of lipoproteins. The elimination of lipoprotein is a substance that is active in the blood system and has the function of suppressing appetite, which can influence the brain to make the decision whether to eat or not. Sleep deprivation can also cause an increase in the concentration of appetite hormones in the body. Appetite hormones are substances secreted by the stomach that cause the desire to eat. When these appetite hormones are in conflict with each other, the brain’s decision-making system may make the wrong decision. If people can maintain a normal sleep schedule, it is possible to keep their appetite regulators out of disarray and keep their weight in a more normal range. The study also found that to keep the body’s endocrine system from disrupting, a person should maintain a sleep schedule of seven hours or more each night. Another study conducted in 2004 also showed that adults who slept less than 5 hours a day had 15% higher levels of the “hunger hormone” than normal people, which led to a higher appetite. In addition, insulin in the sleep-deprived group does not metabolize glucose properly, and thus may develop into obesity. In contrast, insulin sensitivity was normal in the normal sleep group. It is not known whether sleep-deprived individuals can improve insulin sensitivity in their bodies after improving their sleep. Therefore, those who sleep more than 8 hours a day and less than 4 hours a day will make their weight increase and the right amount of sleep is what contributes to health. In today’s stressful society, more and more people will be sleep deprived and even suffer from insomnia, which not only affects daily life functions, but more importantly, can induce obesity and diabetes. Perhaps sleep is not an effective tool in our fight against obesity and diabetes. But we must take its positive effects seriously, because even the smallest changes in energy balance can lead to very beneficial results.
