Timing of Treatment for Diastasis

Diastema needs to be treated differently depending on the age. The whole stage is from the age of 4-6 years old during the period of milk teeth. It starts with the first stage of correction of the rebellious rivers of milk teeth, using simple aligners. It may or may not be done to lift the diastema. Then comes the orthodontic treatment during the period of tooth replacement, which is mainly a period of growth improvement using the period before the growth spurt. The actual age of this stage varies from person to person and requires a visit to the hospital to take pictures to determine the actual bone age of the patient, so it needs to be done by a professional orthodontist. This stage may or may not be cured, because there is also a growth factor in it. However, in general, treatment is better than no treatment. Even if the growth improvement cannot completely correct the diastema, it can reduce the degree of deformity in the future, which is very beneficial for the later treatment. The third stage is usually around 12-13 years old, when the tooth replacement is completed, and the patient’s orthodontic treatment and the need for extraction will be determined according to the degree of malocclusion and growth. If the deformity is not serious at this stage and extraction is not required, then orthodontic treatment can be attempted without any side effects. However, if extraction is needed, you should be careful and you may have trouble in the future. If the third stage of malformation is heavy and the growth potential is still relatively large, then you can choose some conservative treatment and observe the changes of facial development first, you can regularly go to the cranial lateral positioning film every year for individual development assessment and record, so that you can have a better understanding of the patient’s development when orthodontics in the future. Wait until the growth and development is basically completed. This is around the age of 16 years for girls and 18 years for boys. It is also important to note that even after the third stage of treatment, there is still a possibility of relapse. If the deformity is not serious, you may need a high level doctor to correct it, or general orthodontic treatment combined with surgical methods to treat it.
