As the pace of life accelerates, eyelid jumping is becoming more and more of a problem in people’s work lives. The frequent and pronounced eyelid jumping is medically known as “blepharospasm” and is caused by abnormal and frequent contractions of the muscles that govern eyelid contraction (orbicularis oculi). There are two causes: nervousness, lack of sleep, and fatigue; and eye disease or neurovascular disease. The more frequent eyelid fluttering may be a precursor to certain eye or systemic diseases. What is blepharospasm? Blepharospasm is a relatively common focal dystonia that starts in adulthood. Early on, patients experience increased blinking and sunken eyelids, often with paroxysmal difficulty in opening the eyes when gazing, and later on, they experience persistent eyelid closure and even functional visual impairment. The condition is usually insidious and worsens with stress and emotional distress. Clinical manifestations of blepharospasm Early on, there is a marked increase in blinking or difficulty in keeping the eyes open, which usually progresses to involuntary eyelid closure over a period of 12 years. The examination reveals a shortening of the distance between the eyelids, a drooping brow, a smaller lid fissure, involuntary twitching of the skin around the lids and at the base of the nose, frequent blinking, and tightly closed eyes that cannot be opened at will during the spasm. Treatment of blepharospasm: The etiology and pathogenesis of blepharospasm are not known, and treatment is exploratory and symptomatic. In the past, antipsychotic medications such as haloperidol, carbamazepine, valium, and surgery have been used, but their efficacy has been unsatisfactory. Local injection of botulinum toxin type A has become the first choice for the treatment of this disorder because of its efficacy, mild and reversible adverse effects, and ease of operation. Patients who are not effectively treated with botulinum toxin, whose symptoms are not effectively controlled, or who have tolerated botulinum toxin and whose spasticity is progressively worsening require surgical treatment, including myotomy and oculoplastic surgery to treat eyelid spasm and the complications of spasm such as ptosis and ptosis. The attached chart shows the before and after Botulinum toxin type A drug injections Tip: Eyelid fluttering for a few seconds to a few minutes is mostly normal and will recover automatically after a period of time. Therefore, when the eyelids just jumping, do not need to immediately go to treatment, but to pay more attention to rest, relax, and maintain a good state of mind; at the same time, pay attention to observe whether the eyelid jumping is gradually reduced or increased, whether there is a tendency to expand downward and from around the eye to the corner of the mouth line pulling feeling. If the eyelid jumping is increasing or persists for a long time, the movement of the eyelids does not follow the will to govern and affects normal visual activities, thus causing the patient’s life and work to be seriously affected, and in severe cases, the patient loses the ability to care for himself or herself due to functional blindness. In addition, long-term spasm of the eyelids produces a series of secondary changes, also facial beauty is seriously damaged, it should be treated at a professional medical institution.
