What does NIV mean in medical terms?

NIV, which stands for non-invasive ventilation, is a form of manual ventilation that does not require endotracheal intubation and is a relatively effective means of treatment by giving positive pressure ventilation to the airway. It can be used for early treatment during periods of exacerbation, when the patient can speak, can retain the reflex action of swallowing, and can protect the defense mechanisms of the airway. This is an effective, non-invasive, commonly used means of ventilation for patients who need improved ventilation without significant damage to the patient’s airway. The general adaptation of NIV is mainly for the treatment of relatively mild respiratory failure.
