In patients with cirrhosis, total bile acids may return to normal if their condition is mild and they receive regular treatment, but cirrhosis is irreversible and liver tissue cannot return to normal.
Total bile acids are a more sensitive indicator of liver parenchymal damage and can reflect the excretory function of the liver. It is a metabolic product of cholesterol breakdown in the liver and enterohepatic circulation. When hepatocellular injury or bile duct obstruction inside or outside the liver occurs, it will lead to abnormal bile acid metabolism.
Cirrhotic patients with high total bile acids should first pay attention to rest, dietary regulation, such as maintaining a light diet, avoid greasy, avoid spicy stimulating food. Medications include ursodeoxycholic acid, glucuronolactone, adenosylmethionine and so on. All drugs need to be used under the guidance of a physician.
