What to do if your child always coughs

Treatment of a child’s cough depends on the cause of the cough, such as anti-infection treatment. If the cough is caused by a bacterial infection, it can be treated with antibiotics. Infections caused by viruses cannot be treated with antibiotics. There is no specific medicine for most viral infections, but influenza virus can be treated with oseltamivir, although it needs to be used early in the infection. If the cough is caused by an asthma attack, it can be treated with medication, which is usually inhaled into the lungs via nebulization. If the cough is caused by a foreign body stuck in the child’s airway, the doctor can perform a bronchoscopy to find and remove the foreign body. There is no specific treatment for many coughs, so pediatricians usually do not prescribe central cough suppressants, which are usually not very effective and can cause serious side effects in children.
