Is there a relationship between menstrual disorders and ovarian cysts?

The relationship between menstrual disorders and ovarian cysts is variable. Physiologic cysts generally do not cause menstrual disorders, while luteal cysts may affect the menstrual cycle. Most ovarian cysts occur during the menstrual cycle and are called “physiologic cysts”. They do not affect the body and most disappear on their own. This type of ovarian cyst does not usually affect hormone levels and does not cause changes in the menstrual cycle. Another type of ovarian cyst occurs after the egg is released from the follicle and is called a corpus luteum cyst. This type of cyst releases progesterone, which affects menstruation, then problems with menstrual changes, such as heavy or irregular periods or abnormal vaginal bleeding during menstruation, can occur. If a patient has a disrupted menstrual cycle, he or she needs to seek medical attention to identify the cause and intervene promptly to avoid delays.
