How soon can I get out of bed after surgery for intertrochanteric fracture of the femur

The time to get out of bed after surgery is determined by the preoperative fracture staging and the reliability of the internal fixation during the surgeon’s own surgery. Generally, if the fracture is stable, the patient can be encouraged to get out of bed on the second day after surgery and use a walker to perform functional exercises without weight on the affected limb, i.e., weight on the healthy side, and then the patient can perform hip and knee flexion without weight on the affected side. If the patient has an unstable fracture, the patient should be bedridden for about 3-4 weeks after surgery and wait until the fibrous scab has been created before taking appropriate functional exercises out of bed.
