Epilepsy is a group of chronic brain diseases characterized by recurrent, sudden and transient abnormalities of central nervous system function caused by excessive abnormal discharge of neurons in the brain, and is a common disease in pediatrics. This disease belongs to the category of “epilepsy”, “epilepsy disease” and “fetal disease” in Chinese medicine. According to Chinese medicine, epilepsy is mostly caused by disorders of the seven emotions, congenital factors, traumatic brain injury, poor diet, overexertion or other diseases, resulting in imbalance of the internal organs, phlegm and turbidity obstruction, Qi rebellion and wind and Yang internal movement. Chinese medicine has the advantages of individualized treatment and non-toxic (or low toxicity) and long-term use, and a large number of clinical reports have demonstrated the effectiveness of Chinese medicine in treating epilepsy. The etiology of epilepsy is quite complex, with both congenital and acquired factors. Congenital factors such as fetal fright and deficiency of genetic yin; acquired factors include difficult birth surgery, panic and fall, brain injury, and repeated wind fright. External fever, emotional stress, overexertion, sound and light stimulation can often be triggering factors. In summary, the main causes of seizures are stubborn phlegm, violent fright, frequent frightening wind, trauma and blood stasis. Because phlegm has a gathering and dispersal, and wind has movement, the development and cessation are unpredictable. The disease is located in the heart, liver, spleen and kidney. The treatment of epilepsy emphasizes dialectical treatment, and should distinguish between the symptoms and the deficiencies. The actual evidence is based on the treatment of the symptoms, with emphasis on expelling phlegm and quenching wind, calming panic and opening the orifice. Pediatric epilepsy is often clinically divided into epilepsy of shock, epilepsy of phlegm, epilepsy of wind, epilepsy of blood stasis, epilepsy of spleen and phlegm deficiency, and epilepsy of spleen and kidney deficiency. The epilepsy is characterized by a history of shock or strong mental stimulation (e.g., domestic violence) before the onset of epilepsy. The treatment is to calm the mind and tranquilize the spirit, and the prescription is often chosen from Zhen Zhen Wan plus or minus. Phlegm epilepsy is characterized by phlegm salivation, phlegm sounding in the throat, staring straight at the eyes, or suddenly falling to the ground, and twitching of the hands and feet. The symptoms of phlegm epilepsy are: numbness, numbness and pain in the limbs, headache and abdominal pain. The treatment is to open the phlegm and open the orifice, and the formula is often used to add or subtract phlegm. Wind epilepsy, sudden collapse, loss of consciousness, tonic neck and body, followed by twitching of the limbs, eyes upward or oblique, teeth closed, foaming at the mouth, lips and face blue, the treatment is to quench the wind and stop spasm, the prescription is often selected Epilepsy Pill or wind-led Tang plus or minus. In epilepsy with blood stasis, dizziness and vertigo, confusion, unilateral or extremity convulsions, headache, dry stool, red tongue with little coating or stasis points, astringent pulse, and sunken fingerprints, the treatment is to remove blood stasis and clear the orifice. Spleen deficiency with phlegm, frequent seizures or after repeated seizures, fatigue, dullness, dizziness, poor appetite, thin stools, pale tongue, thin and greasy moss, slow and moist pulse, the treatment is to strengthen the spleen and resolve phlegm, the formula can be Liu Jun Zi Tang with addition. In the case of deficiency of both spleen and kidney, with long onset, repeated onset, shivering, fatigue, little breath and lazy speech, dizziness from time to time, mental retardation, soreness and weakness of the waist and knees, lack of warmth in the limbs, restless sleep, loose stools, pale tongue, white tongue coating, sunken and weak pulse, the main treatment is to tonify the spleen and kidney, often treated with He Che Ba Wei Wan with addition. There are many methods and means to treat this disease in TCM, but they all focus on the liver and kidney and take into account the heart and spleen. These methods are clinically effective in overcoming the side effects of Western medicine and the adverse effects of prolonged use of Western medicine on the growth and development of children.
