Where is the rectum located?

The rectum is a section of the intestines located from the sacrum and coccyx to the anus. The rectum is the last section of the entire gastrointestinal and digestive system and is about 12-15 centimeters in length. It can be divided into two parts according to the upper and lower parts, one part located above the pelvic septum, called the pelvic part, and one part located below the pelvic septum, called the anal canal and anus. Located in the lower part of the pelvic region is a segment of the pike-shaped, enlarged rectum, medically known as the recto-pelvic abdomen, which mainly serves to store feces. In addition, the rectum has two curves and three transverse folds in the anterior-posterior direction, which mainly serve to support the stool from sliding involuntarily out of the bowel and anus. Also below the septum are two types of musculature in the anal canal area, the internal and external sphincters, which primarily control the opening and closing of the anus through contraction and relaxation to help control and expel stool. Of the organs connected to and in close proximity to the rectum, the anterior ones are the bladder, seminal vesicles, and prostate in males or the uterus and vagina in females, respectively.
