Can I have hysteroscopic surgery for fundal fibroids?

Whether or not a fundal fibroid can be operated on hysteroscopically is usually determined by the location of the fibroid growth. Fundic fibroids are benign tumors of the uterine smooth muscle that proliferate in the uterine fundus. According to the relationship between the tumor and the uterine muscle wall can be divided into intermural leiomyoma that occurs within the uterine muscle wall, submucosal leiomyoma that protrudes from the endometrial covering of the uterine cavity, and submucosal leiomyoma that grows outward toward the plasma membrane and protrudes from the outside of the uterus. Submucosal fibroids can be treated surgically by doing a hysteroscopy. Intermural or subplasma fibroids are treated by laparoscopy. This is because hysteroscopy is unable to visualize the location of the myometrium, or the size and number of fibroids under the plasma membrane. Patients are advised to clarify the location of the fibroids well before proceeding with symptomatic surgery.
