The abdominal aorta is the major artery of the body and continues directly from the aorta of the left ventricle and the thoracic aorta. It descends along the left side of the spine and is mainly responsible for the vascular supply of the organs of the abdominal cavity and the abdominal wall. The arteries that emanate directly are: i. Mural branches. ii. the visceral branches. iii. superior mesenteric artery. iv. submesenteric arteries. The mural branches are divided into the subphrenic, lumbar and median sacral arteries. The visceral branches are divided into the middle adrenal artery, renal artery, testicular artery and abdominal trunk. The superior mesenteric artery is divided into the pancreatic 12-finger inferior mesenteric artery, ileocolic artery, left colonic, right colonic artery, and mesocolic artery. The inferior mesenteric artery is divided into the left colic artery and the superior rectal artery.
