Whether hypertension medication can be stopped varies according to individual differences, different diseases, and different treatment conditions, and cannot be generalized. In some cases, such as grade 1 hypertension and some secondary hypertension, medication can be temporarily stopped; most patients with primary hypertension cannot stop taking medication, as follows:
1. Drugs can be temporarily stopped:
(1) Grade 1 hypertension: the patient’s condition is mild, usually through low-salt and low-fat diet, appropriate exercise and other lifestyle interventions in the summer when the blood pressure can be kept within the normal range, you can temporarily stop hypertension medication, the cold weather needs to be based on the situation and then take antihypertensive drugs.
(2) Some secondary hypertension: for example, hypertension caused by hyperthyroidism, after iodine 131 or surgical treatment, thyroid function returns to normal and blood pressure returns to normal; secondary hypertension caused by nephrolithiasis, adrenal adenoma, etc., the blood pressure of some patients can return to normal after surgical treatment. In the above cases, antihypertensive drugs can be stopped.
2. Cannot stop taking medication: Most of the patients with primary hypertension may have elevated blood pressure due to abnormalities of neuroactive factors, body fluids and blood vessels, etc. They should insist on taking antihypertensive medications such as valsartan and benedryl to control their blood pressure, and they can’t stop taking medication, and the fluctuation of blood pressure after stopping medication may easily cause cerebral infarction, myocardial ischemia and other damages to the heart, brain and renal target organs.
If the patient is already taking high blood pressure medication, it is recommended to go to the cardiology department of the hospital, and then determine whether the medication can be discontinued under the evaluation and guidance of the doctor.
