Several misconceptions about the diagnosis and treatment of “red eyes

Hot weather, “red eye” also began to more, every day to see a dozen of such patients. For this very common disease, many patients, including doctors have misconceptions about the diagnosis and treatment, according to my experience, here is a summary of a few in the usual outpatient clinic often encountered a few questions briefly. 1, red eyes is “red eye”. The so-called “pink eye” professional name called acute conjunctivitis, is a common in the early summer season of infectious diseases, in addition to eye redness, also accompanied by foreign body sensation, tearing, burning sensation, itching, etc., while there can be a lot of secretions, can be mucus or purulent. The “red eye” is characterized by diffuse redness of the white eyeball and redness of the upper and lower eyelids when they are opened. If the redness is limited to a large area of the white eye and is not accompanied by the above symptoms, it is usually a subconjunctival hemorrhage, which can be absorbed slowly and is not contagious. 2, hanging water can make the “red eye” faster. As red eye is a limited infection of the conjunctiva, intravenous systemic antibiotic drip does not play a good therapeutic effect (except for gonococcal conjunctivitis), sometimes even because of the neglect of local treatment and aggravate the condition, damage to the cornea resulting in inflammation of the cornea. The correct method should be localized with frequent dots of effective antibiotic or antiviral eye solution, systemic medication is not necessary. 3, point eye drops will be fine. Since “pink eye” is a contagious disease, in addition to the eye medication, pay attention to personal hygiene and control the transmission route is also crucial. If the family has red-eye patients, not only the use of towels and washbasins and other utensils to be separated, more importantly, daily disinfection and sterilization to avoid residual bacteria on the towel re-infection; each contact with the affected eye to wash hands, do not directly touch other items and cause cross-infection; can not wipe the affected eye with hands or sleeves, available cotton swabs with clean water after wiping and throwing away; do not wrap or tightly closed eyes, can wear sunglasses Reduce the symptoms of irritation. 4, “red eye” will be fine without treatment. Although the “red eye” has a certain self-limiting, but try to early adequate treatment, or not only to life and work, serious cases will form conjunctival pseudomembrane, and the formation of corneal infiltration, so that the discomfort persists for a long time. Generally speaking, viral conjunctivitis is more severe than bacterial conjunctivitis, and the treatment effect is also worse, so it should be paid more attention to, as far as possible in the early stage of the disease treatment. 5, look at the “red-eye patient” eyes can be infectious. The red eye is a contact infection, look at the eye is not likely to be infectious, otherwise we ophthalmologists would not have to red-eye every day. So as long as you avoid contact with the secretions of red-eye patients, pay attention to personal hygiene, cut off the transmission path can be very good to prevent being infected.
