Herniated lumbar intervertebral disc belongs to the category of lumbago in traditional Chinese medicine, and Duo Wu Sheng Tang can be used to treat lumbago caused by deficiency of the liver and kidney (weakness of the liver and kidney functions). Dewoong Sangsang Tang is a formula for dispelling dampness and its effects are dispelling wind-dampness, relieving paralysis, benefiting the liver and kidney, tonifying qi and blood, and treating prolonged paralysis, deficiency of liver and kidney, and insufficiency of qi and blood. The causes of lumbago include external attack, physical weakness and ageing, falling and flashing, etc., paralysis of tendons and veins, loss of nourishment for the waist, with deficiency of kidney qi as the root of the disease, and occlusion of meridian qi as the symptom. Lumbago is often categorized into different types according to different nature and symptoms: cold-damp lumbago, damp-heat lumbago, kidney deficiency lumbago and so on. Chinese medicine treats lumbago with formulas that correspond to the different types of pain, such as Gan, Jiang, Ling and Zhu Tang for cold-dampness lumbago, and Si Miao Pill for dampness-heat lumbago. Dok Ju Sang Sang Tang can be used to treat low back pain caused by deficiency of the liver and kidney, but it is not effective in treating other syndromes.
