Symptoms of midge bites may appear within half an hour to 24 hours, depending on the individual. Midge bites may present with itching, localized pain, swelling, redness and, in severe cases, an itchy, oedematous erythema, blisters or angioedema-like acute phase within half an hour to 24 hours. There are individual differences in the time of onset of symptoms, and the specific manifestations are also related to the individual’s physical condition. Midge bites usually occur on exposed areas, especially on the lower legs, forearms, ankles and dorsum of the feet. Midge bites are usually treated with alkaline solutions such as sodium bicarbonate solution and ammonia, which can reduce the degree of local reaction, and topical glycerine lotion can be applied when itching. If there is any discomfort after a midge bite, prompt medical attention is recommended.
