The apical beat refers to the outward beat produced by the contraction of the heart on the appearance of the chest wall, and the apical beat point is the most obvious location of the beat. In a normal person, the apical beat point is about 0.5 to 1 centimeter medial to the intersection of the left midclavicular line and the fifth intercostal space. Changes in the location, intensity and range of the apical beat often indicate the presence of certain diseases. 1. Changes in the location of the beats: these can be caused by physiologic or pathologic factors. Physiological factors are mainly changes in body position, young children, obese people, pregnant women or too long and thin. Pathological factors are mainly due to various diseases that cause cardiac hypertrophy or enlargement. 2. Changes in the intensity and range of beat: physiological factors, the chest wall is thicker, the narrow intercostal space, the intensity and range of beat is smaller, and vice versa is larger, when strenuous exercise, the apical beat will also be enhanced. Pathological factors, hyperthyroidism, severe anemia, high fever can lead to beat enhancement, dilated cardiomyopathy, myocardial infarction, pericardial effusion, constrictive pericarditis and so on can lead to beat weakening. Therefore, when abnormal apical beats are found, it is necessary to go to the hospital for examination and timely treatment after a clear diagnosis, so as not to delay the condition.
