Antagonist protocols are not indicative of good follicle quality in women, antagonist protocols are aimed at promoting ovulation in women prior to IVF. It is used when a woman’s ovaries are not functioning properly and the follicles are not growing and ovulating properly. The factors that contribute to the quality of the follicles are related to the woman’s age, ovarian function and the quality of her eggs. If a woman has adverse factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption or exposure to radiation, even if she is treated with an antagonist regimen that allows the eggs to develop and ovulate normally, the quality of the follicles may be poor. It is important for women to follow their doctor’s orders and try to adjust their bodies to obtain high quality eggs before IVF.
