Can you drink red wine if you’ve had your pancreas removed?

Patients of pancreatectomy patients are not allowed to drink red wine after surgery. Not only red wine, but also alcoholic beverages including white wine, beer and medicinal wine are not allowed. Alcohol can have a toxic effect on the remaining pancreatic cells after surgery, directly damaging the pancreatic cells. Alcohol consumption is an important trigger for pancreatitis and an independent risk factor for pancreatic cancer. Therefore, alcohol consumption may lead to acute pancreatitis in patients undergoing pancreatectomy, and in addition, postoperative alcohol consumption may lead to recurrence of pancreatic cancer. Patients undergoing pancreatectomy are advised to quit smoking and drinking after surgery, avoid foods with too much fat, such as fatty meat and nuts, and eat a light diet. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables to replenish vitamins and dietary fiber, and eat more protein-rich foods such as chicken and fish. Pancreatectomy patients are advised to avoid drinking alcohol after the operation and go to the hospital for regular review.
