Pain at the base of the ear is considered to be deep ear pain. Pain in the ear, ranging from pain caused by inflammatory diseases to neuropathic ear pain caused by various causes.
Pain caused by diseases of the ear itself, pain caused by various ear trauma, and ear pain caused by various inflammatory diseases. Pain caused by inflammation of the ear is common, such as otitis externa, external ear canal boils, external ear canal cholesteatoma with infection, herpetic tympanitis, acute otitis media and malignant tumors of the ear. Secondary otalgia can occur in adjacent or distant organs, such as diseases of the oral cavity, pharynx, temporomandibular joint, and neck, which are reflected by nerves to the ear and lead to deep ear pain. For example, diseases of the pharynx such as mandibular wisdom teeth obstruction, temporomandibular arthritis, acute purulent tonsillitis, peri-tonsillitis, malignant tumors or ulcers in the pharynx; and cervical arthritis. All of these diseases that cause deep ear pain can cause involvement otalgia.
Pain caused by ear inflammation is often persistent. Earache caused by other causes is often accompanied by symptoms other than the ear, such as earache caused by diseases of the throat, which are related to swallowing and accompanied by painful symptoms in the throat.
