What are the health risks of adalimumab?

Adalimumab may cause infections in the body (such as nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory tract infections, and sinusitis), adverse reactions such as redness, itching, bleeding, pain, or swelling at the site of injection in the body as well as the development of symptoms such as headache and skeletal muscle pain. Adverse reactions vary from person to person and cannot be generalized. It is advisable to use the drug properly under medical supervision to minimize the occurrence of adverse reactions.
There are reports suggesting that the use of such drugs may affect the body’s defenses against infections and cancer. Fatal and life-threatening infections (including sepsis, opportunistic infections, and tuberculosis), recurrence of hepatitis B, and multiple malignancies (including leukemia, lymphoma, and hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma) have been reported with adalimumab.
Serious hematologic reactions, neurologic reactions, and autoimmune reactions have also occurred; these include various types of hemocytopenia, aplastic anemia, central and peripheral demyelinating adverse events, and also lupus.
It is contraindicated in persons who are hypersensitive to the product and the ingredients contained therein, in patients with moderate to severe heart failure, in patients with active tuberculosis or other serious infectious disorders such as sepsis and opportunistic infections. It should be used with caution in pregnant women and not in children under 18 years of age.
