Diabetic patients should have regular eye visits

                   Diabetic retinopathy is the earliest complication of diabetes mellitus. Diabetic retinopathy has become one of the most common causes of blindness in middle-aged and elderly people, especially in cases of uncontrolled blood glucose, and it occurs in more than 50% of people with diabetes for more than 5-10 years. Diabetes may also cause cataracts, glaucoma, conjunctivitis, keratitis and oculomotor nerve palsy. In the ophthalmology diabetic retinopathy clinic, about 2/3 of patients have severe diabetic retinopathy resulting in visual disability and in some cases, even blindness.  Diabetic patients should not only see their internist regularly, but also their ophthalmologist 1-2 times a year.
